HIS PURPOSE AND THE RIGHT RESPONSE

Each section is intended to serve as a starting point for further study, allowing Scripture to interpret Scripture.

His Purpose and the Right Response

This study examines why Jesus came, what His coming accomplishes, and how we are meant to respond.

1. Why Jesus Came (His Purpose Stated by Himself)

A. To Save Sinners

Luke 19:10 (KJV)
“For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.”

1 Timothy 1:15
“Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners…”

This is the core mission: humanity is lost, and Jesus came to find and rescue.

B. To Call to Repentance

Luke 5:32
“I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.”

This is not only about forgiveness, but a turning of heart and life toward God.

C. To Do the Father’s Will

John 6:38–40
“For I came down from heaven, not to do mine own will, but the will of him that sent me…”

His purpose was not self-directed; He came in complete obedience to the Father.

D. To Give His Life (Atonement)

Mark 10:45
“For even the Son of man came… to give his life a ransom for many.”

He came not only to teach, but to give His life in place of others.

E. To Destroy the Works of the Devil

1 John 3:8
“For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.”

This includes sin, deception, bondage, and death.

F. To Bring Light and Truth

John 18:37
“To this end was I born… that I should bear witness unto the truth.”

John 12:46
“I am come a light into the world…”

He reveals God and exposes darkness.

G. To Bring Life

John 10:10
“I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.”

This refers to spiritual life, not merely physical existence.

H. To Establish a Kingdom

Luke 4:43
“I must preach the kingdom of God… for therefore am I sent.”

This is a spiritual kingdom under the rule of God.

2. What His Coming Accomplishes

A. Reconciliation with God

2 Corinthians 5:18–19
“God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself…”

This restores the broken relationship between God and humanity.

B. Forgiveness of Sins

Ephesians 1:7
“In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins…”

C. Justification

Romans 5:1
“Being justified by faith, we have peace with God…”

This means being made right before God.

D. New Birth

John 3:3
“Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.”

This speaks of a new spiritual life.

E. Freedom from Sin’s Power

Romans 6:6
“That the body of sin might be destroyed…”

F. Sanctification

Hebrews 10:10
“We are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.”

This refers to being made holy.

G. Adoption as Children of God

John 1:12
“To them gave he power to become the sons of God…”

3. The Right Response to Jesus

Scripture makes clear that His coming requires a response.

A. Repent

Acts 3:19
“Repent ye therefore, and be converted…”

This involves turning from sin.

B. Believe

John 3:16
“Whosoever believeth in him should not perish…”

This involves trust, reliance, and surrender.

C. Follow Him

Luke 9:23
“If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.”

This is a life of discipleship.

D. Obey His Words

John 14:15
“If ye love me, keep my commandments.”

Love is demonstrated through obedience.

E. Receive the Holy Spirit

Acts 2:38
“Repent… and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.”

This brings empowerment for a new life.

F. Continue (Endure)

Matthew 24:13
“He that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved.”

This is an ongoing walk, not a single moment.

4. Summary

Jesus came to save, restore, and establish God’s rule.
His work forgives, transforms, and frees.
The proper response is to repent, believe, follow, obey, and continue.
